How it all began...

Danny’s Helping Hands began in 2006 when founder Colleen Edwards realized that students and families within the Iroquois Central School District had basic needs that weren’t being met. At the time, Colleen was a social worker within the district, so it became easy to identify those that were in need of a little assistance and kind gesture. “Staff dress down days” sparked the initial way to raise funds to support the needs of students, whether it was clothing, hygiene items, assisting with fees for sports or financial assistance. Word started to spread and local churches, businesses, scout groups and community members came forward to support what was then known as Helping Hands. The program continued to grow, and shortly thereafter, programs were added to help provide food at Thanksgiving and gifts at Christmas.
Under the leadership of Colleen and her daughter Ashley, a school supply program was added and they began providing disaster relief for families facing housing emergencies or homelessness, financial assistance for medical copays, rent and utilities, and addressing food insecurities. Individuals and families that have been helped have been inspired to give back to the program. Danny’s Helping Hands honors the legacy of Colleen’s brother Danny, who passed away in 2013. Danny was not a stranger to adversity and his mantra of being the first person to give the shirt off his back is the true meaning of this program. His memory serves as a reminder of the importance of seeing and uplifting those in need. Today, Danny’s is a registered 501c3 organization, led by our board of directors and many volunteers. Together we can ensure every child, individual and family in our community has the opportunity to thrive and succeed. Join us in our mission to support those in need and foster a culture of giving. |
